Interpretation or Translation ?
What is the Difference between Translation and Interpretation?
These two terms can be confusing to many people. Some people think that they mean the same thing and use them interchangeably. However, they are different notions altogether and are not interchangeable, but are closely related or intertwined, as you are about to find out.
Translation is the communication of meaning of a source language text by means of an equivalent target language text. Therefore, translation refers to written information, whereas interpretation refers to spoken or oral conveyance of the information.
A translator translates written information and an interpreter conveys spoken information without losing or distorting the meaning of the source.
The main goal of translation is to convey the original meaning, tone and intent of a message, taking into account cultural and regional differences between source and target languages.
Organizations around the world, encompassing a multitude of sectors, missions, and mandates, rely on translation for content as diverse as product labels, technical documentation, user reviews, promotional materials, annual reports, and etc.
Common types of interpretation
- Simultenoues Interpretation. In simultaneous interpretation (SI), the interpreter listens to the speaker and renders the message in the target-language at the same time as the speaker is speaking. This method is most suitable for conferences. Thus SI includes conference interpretation and chuchotage (whispering) interpretation when you have a small group of people requiring interpretation.
- Consecutive Interpretation. Here, the interpreter speaks after the source-language speaker has stopped speaking. It is best suited to community interpretation.
- Remote interpretation. This is a type of interpretation using specialized equipment to communicate between the parties. This can be divided into: Telephone interpretation and video interpretation. The arrival of COVID pandemic in 2020 gave prominence to video interpretation via popular platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet etc. We coach you the best techniques and tips to pass your exams at the first attempt.
- Escort / Travel Interpretation: Whenever you are hosting a delegation of visitors from another country who do not speak your language, you will need an escort interpreter to meet your clients at the airport, tours and excursions. Escort interpreters generally interpret informal conversations, and can be useful also in provision of meet-and-greet services at the airport to the accomodation venues.
